The City of Avondale, incorporated in 1946, is ranked one of the fastest growing residential areas of Maricopa County, Arizona. Avondale is home to the Phoenix International Raceway, also known as PIR, nestled in the foothills of the Estrella Mountains, which hosts many important auto races each year, including the Copper World Classic in February, and the NASCAR Winston Cup Dura-Lube 550 in October. The raceway with a seating capacity of over 100,000, has been rated one of the fastest one-mile ovals in the world. The track is located on the southern edge of Avondale away from residential areas. Billy Moore Days celebrated during the third
week in October, by Avondale and its neighboring communities of the area's
colorful past.
White Tanks Mountain Regional Park lies to the northwest and is named for its natural rock water tanks. Many unusual petroglyphs are found in the 26,000-acre park, which features hiking trails, a waterfall and scenic desert vistas.
Avondale homeowners enjoy a warm southwestern climate with summer highs reaching 106 degrees and winters as low as 36 degrees.
The Avondale area, known as "Arizona's salad bowl", is one of the state's largest farming areas. The land has produced lettuce, carrots, cauliflower, onions and many other vegetables. The melons, dates and citrus grown here are among the best in the state. Cotton, wheat, barley and alfalfa are also produced.
The legend goes that Avondale's founder, William
"Billy" G. Moore, was a member of a Civil War guerrilla gang led by
Willard Clarke Quantrill. Moore, the gang's blacksmith, was banished by
the governor of Missouri to the Arizona Territory in 1867 and was the
first settler in the desert area located next to the Agua Fria River.
Billy Moore called his settlement "Coldwater, Arizona", which referred to
the Agua Fria River (Spanish for "cold water") with an "on again and off
again" flow pattern, and for the water that flowed from a nearby spring.
Billy Moore later created a freight station here around the year 1900, he
purchased land, established a Butterfield Stage Run
In the early 1900s, the Coldwater post office moved to a site near the Avondale Ranch. The Post Office became known as Avondale, and the name Coldwater was discontinued. Avondale then began to grow as an agricultural town. Avondale, founded around 1900 and incorporated in December of 1946, was named after the Avondale Ranch. A mural, by Cuban artist Victor Caldee which can be seen at Goodyear Farms Historic Cemetery, located off Indian School Road, along Santa Fe Trail, in Avondale, depicts the history of the Campesinos, farm workers who labored to transform the Southwest Valley's raw desert into the rich farmland that is is today, and serves as a testimony to the hard work of the Mexican immigrants hired by Goodyear Farms in the early 1900s to cultivate cotton, a crop that was vital to the World War II effort. The Goodyear Farms Cemetery was established by Paul Litchfield in 1917, as the final resting place of the Goodyear Farms workers and their descendants.
